20-year-old who stole Honda City killed by cop in Ravi Nagar shoot-out

Unknown to them that the car they had stolen was having a GPS tracking device, three hardened criminals were intercepted by a crime branch team of Gurgaon police on Thursday night while they were consuming liquor at a plot of Gali no 4 in Ravi Nagar on Basai road.
When the trio saw a police official knocking the driverside window, one of them fired a shot from inside, which was immediately retaliated by the police officer killing the driver who tried to escape in the Honda City stolen from Gandhi Nagar in Gurgaon on Wednesday, the police said.
The deceased was identified as Akash Kumar (20), a hardened criminal.
Police said despite being critically injured in the shootout, Akash drove the car towards Gali no 3 and took a left turn, but hit a large cement manhole cover in the middle of the street. As the car lost balance, the car hit a pole a few metres ahead. He also tried to run over the officer, the police said.
One of the accused managed to disembark from the car, when it slowed down after hitting the manhole cover and managed to escape, the police said.
“The crime branch officials encircled the car and it took about two minutes for them to arrest one of the accused on the driver’s seat. However, the critically injured driver (Akash), couldn’t come out and had to pulled out by policemen,” Rame Pradhan, a local who saw the incident from the top of his house, said.
Police said Akash was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead.
Aakash alias Lucky, hailed from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh and was living on rent in Bahadurgarh. Another accused, who was arrested from the car, was identified as Sagar (20). Manish, the third accused who managed to escape from the spot, fired at the officer, the police said. Sagar, too, is a resident of Bahadurgarh.
Vivek Sachdeva, owner of the stolen Honda City, had lodged a complaint of car theft with the police and a case was registered at Shivaji Nagar police station on Thursday. Sachdeva later informed the police that he was tracking his car through a GPS device and told them about its movement after which the crime branch located the car in an empty plot in Ravi Nagar.
Sachdeva was also accompanying the police team, as they tracked down the accused. He also identified the vehicle before the police intercepted the accused. It was also revealed later that the car had remained stationed near a police station on Thursday.
Locals also said that Akash knew the Ravi Nagar area quite well,as he had stayed in the colony for sometime before moving out in 2014.
“His distant relatives and people from his village in Aligarh also stay on the same street where he was killed,” one of the local residents said.
The police said that the accused Akash had more than 30 criminal cases registered against him. These included car theft, burglary, dacoity, attempt to murder in Gurgaon and Delhi-NCR.
“As per a the Supreme Court directive and guidelines of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the autopsy of the deceased was conducted by a team of doctors and the postmortem examination was also videographed. The three accused are hardened criminals and a case against them has been registered at Sector 9A police station under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The family members of the deceased have been informed about the incident,” Ravinder Kumar, PRO, Gurgaon police, said.
