Chevening Art Week: Art brings colours, canvases and experts together

From sculptures, paintings to interactive installations, an art week is being organised by the Chevening Alumni Association with support from the British High Commission and The British Education Centre.

A platform for creative minds, the Chevening Art Week, organised in the city, will see Chevening scholars bring out their artistic side through various mediums such as sculptures, paintings, photographs and installations.

An artwork by artist Devdutta Padekar; Chevening Art Week is being organised in Gurgaon that will see a series of sessions and talks.

Artist Samar S Jodha will open the exhibition and speak on art trends, whereas curator Kanika Anand will share insights on curating contemporary art in India. Also expect interesting sessions by photographer, Aditya Arya, who will talk on creating an archive of Kulwant Rai’s photographs from pre-independent India and volunteers from New Delhi Rising, Delhi Street Art and Basic Shit will emphasise on the movement of restoring public spaces in Delhi through street art

The event also consists of an exhibition of multimedia art works by 17 scholar-artists. Devajyoti Ray, an IPS officer and one of the curators, says, “Chevening Alumni India, an association of mid-career professionals has been organising a series of lectures, over the past one year. The subjects include fields of science and technology, economics, public health and gender. It’s aimed at understanding today’s art scenario in India and how people engage with it. Compared to literature, most people don’t understand art.”

An interactive installation of architect Somya Chaturvedi will be displayed at the venue.

Somya Chaturvedi, an architect by profession, will showcase an interactive installation at the event. “The theme of my installation is cultures of India. The idea is to portray how the colourful the varied cultures of India are. I have used kites as the symbol of India. The kites will move in accordance with the movement of people. It’s a wonderful opportunity to present our work,” she says.

Wonder how a ceramic pot may tell a story? Watch out for Gurgaon-based artist Rahul Kumar, whose ceramics works will be on display too. He says, “Pottery, for me, is a spiritual journey, a creative discipline, a passionate love affair to revel in. It’s important for art to get out of those traditional white-cube gallery spaces.”
