Court seeks report on groundwater conservation

The direction came while a bench of justices Arjun Sikri and Rakesh Jain was hearing a petition over the illegal use of groundwater for construction in Gurgaon.
According to the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA), groundwater table in Gurgaon is depleting by one metre every year whereas independent experts claim the figure is around three metre.
The court had on July 16 directed the state government not to give go-ahead to any new construction project in the district unless the builder gives an undertaking that no groundwater will be used for construction work.
The developer community is anxiously waiting for a reprieve.
Following the court order, the government has sealed 479 construction sites using illegal borewells for drawing groundwater. Around five lakh construction labourers have been rendered jobless in the wake of the sealing.
The next hearing of the case is on November 1.
