That Gurugram is big on cycling is a well-established fact. Spotting a fully-geared cyclist pedaling to office or some other place is a common sight on Golf Course Road and around. However, temperatures in the city have been soaring to 45 degrees, and cycling in the heat may be far less appealing than during other times of the year. But cyclists in the city say that the hot weather shouldn’t stop you from enjoying your ride, as long as you take some precautions to prevent over-heating and dehyderation.

With World Environment Day around the corner, and Gurugram grappling with various enviornmental issues, now is a great time to take up cycling.

According to Manas Fuloria, a Gurugram-based cyclist, when riding, you have to make sure that you carry with you plenty of water to drink. Leaving early for work – at around 8 am when it’s still cool – is a good option. “I also prefer to head home after work before the rush hour so that I don’t have to stop repeatedly,” he says.

Apart from following the above schedule, you can use a peaked helmet or cap to keep the sun from your eyes. Absorbent wristbands can also be used to wipe whatever perspiration you may encounter. You should also dress for the weather. Lightweight materials with wicking properties will help you cool off and prevent the uncomfortable build-up of sweat.
