An inmate suffered severe injuries to his eye after being attacked by two other inmates with a sharp-edged weapon on Wednesday at Bhondsi jail.
Both the accused inmates were arrested on charges of attempt to murder while the victim was arrested on an assault charge.
The police identified the victim as Kanwar Singh, who in his statement said that he allegedly lied to the warden and went to the canteen area, instead of his barracks, around 10.50am on Wednesday and there he got into a fight with two other inmates — Sachin and Pawan.
According to Kanwar, the two assaulted him with a sharp-edged weapon without any reason. He suffered an injury to his eye and had to take eight stitches.
The police said Kanwar was given medical treatment inside the jail itself. After recording his statement, a case was registered against Sachin and Pawan on Thursday night.
“The three were talking to each other in the canteen area and, soon, a fight started over some issue. The two accused attacked Kanwar with a sharp edged weapon and Kanwar was injured. Despite being questioned separately, the three men did not disclose the reason for the fight,” SI Ram Kumar, the investigation officer in the case, said.
Kumar added that further investigations are ongoing.
“All three inmates will be interrogated after a production warrant is procured. A case has been registered in the matter and we are trying to ascertain the cause of the fight,” Bhondsi station house officer Umesh Kumar said.
Incidents of violence are not uncommon in the jail. Several such incidents have taken place in the past as well.
On September 8, 2017, inmates had attacked the deputy superintendent and head warden of the jail during a routine checking.
On April 23, 2017, a man lodged at the jail had injured another inmate on with a sharp spoon during a fight.
On the night of January 30, around eight to 10 armed men were booked for allegedly threatening the superintendent of Bhondsi jail.
