Gurgaon: MCG resumes online payment of property tax

The online payment had been suspended after the MCG’s official web portal suffered technical glitches

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has restarted online payment of property tax on its official website after ‘technical glitches’ had forced officials to withdraw the scheme.

The system was non-functional since August 31 after the property tax rebate scheme ended. In the interim, property tax payments could only be made through the citizen facilitation centres at the MCG offices in Sector 34 and Civil Lines.

“We had to temporarily suspend the online payment facility for making necessary upgrades to the system. Since a major chunk of our property tax collection comes from the online gateway, we have started the operations once again to ensure that citizens do not face the hassle of visiting MCG offices to clear their dues. They can make payment from their homes,” SS Rohilla, spokesperson, MCG, said.

The MCG had experienced such difficulties in the past as well, which led to the suspension of online payment of property tax for six months. It resumed following a tie-up with HDFC bank in February 2015.

Apart from the online payment of tax through MCG’s official website, www.mcg.gov.in, residents can make the payment through Paytm (mobile wallet service). The option of clearing property tax through Paytm was made available in April.

The MCG has already netted property tax worth over ₹500 crore this year. Over 4 lakh residents, whose properties within the ambit of the MCG, have cleared their arrears.

More than 300 buildings have been sealed by MCG officials, as the owners failed to clear their dues. The MCG is expected to start the auctioning properties of tax defaulters next month in a bid to recover the dues.

A section of MCG officials are also under scanner after an alleged property tax scam was unearthed last month. It even prompted urban local bodies minister Kavita Jain to seek a report from MCG commissioner V Umashankar in the matter.
