Gurgaon: Suncity to get a new zero-waste garbage plant

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) on Tuesday allotted 150 square yards to Suncity Township in Sector 54 for the installation of a zero-waste garbage plant.

The MCG said that it will retain the ownership of the land and the RWA will manage the municipal solid waste.

“The construction of the plant will be the sole responsibility of the Suncity RWA and MCG will not invest any money. We will manage it and bear the cost of maintenance,” Kuldeep Rana, president of the RWA, said.

SS Rohilla, a spokesperson for MCG, said, “MCG officials reserve the right to inspect and examine the site and the operations at any point without interference. In future, if the MCG wants to utilise the land for another purpose, the waste plant will be reallocated or adjusted in the project without any cost to MCG.”

With a view to streamlining waste disposal, the MCG, with the assistance of RWAs, has installed seven solid waste compost plans across the city including Ward 6, Chakkarpur, Sikanderpur, Police Lines and Sector Part-2.

Zero-waste plants are already being used in upscale residential areas such as Nirvana Country, Garden Estate, Silver Oaks apartments, DLF Summit, Aralias, Magnolias, Vaastu Apartments, Richmond Park and Regency Park II.

Recently, the MCG had awarded seven condominiums for their contribution towards a ‘zero-waste society’.

The RWA members had requested MCG to install a decentralised waste treatment unit for managing the municipal solid waste of the township. The MCG commissioner on Tuesday ordered the allocation of the land and passed an order in this regard.

Residents alleged that the township was facing garbage disposal issue as it lacks a treatment plan and it was the need of the hour. “Garbage was being dumped on the vacant land in the township and the residents of blocks E and F were facing health issues, including red rashes from mosquito bites, as the site is adjacent to their blocks. Mosquito breeding and vector-borne diseases are also major concerns”, VMK Singh, general secretary, Suncity RWA, said.

Residents also claimed that many residents are suffering from dengue and chikungunya, and some have been hospitalised.
