With policing taking a backseat and district court authorities unwilling to pay heed to security lapses, burglars are having field day in the district court complex here.
In the last 12 days alone, four lawyers’ chambers have been burgled of valuable items worth several lakhs of rupees.
In the latest case, the lock of a lawyer's chamber in block-C was broken and his new computer was stolen on Monday.
Though a complaint has been filed, the police has made no headway in earlier cases yet.
“This has become a usual affair here,” said Rajiv Khatri whose chamber was burgled.
On the night of July 6, thieves had struck at a chamber in block-A.
Advocate Neeraj Gupta, who uses this chamber, alleged that the police was yet to register an FIR into the case.
On the night of July 27-28, robbers decamped with items worth R2 lakh from two lawyer chambers in block-C.
“My laptop, LCD TV, computer monitor and inverter were stolen from the back window of my chamber,” said lawyer Sanjay Pahuja.
Besides, a theft was also reported from one of the several portable fibre-made customised chambers in the court complex in the last one week.
An air conditioner was stolen from a chamber in block-C two months back but lawyers are more worried about losing valuable data stored in computers. The rise in theft cases is worrying as the court complex is a high-security area.
Pahuja alleged that the police registered an FIR only a week later after he insisted.
City police station SHO Rajinder Singh denied lackadaisical approach by the police.
“We have a PCR and a bike rider stationed at the court's gate throughout the day. In all these cases, we have registered cases and our investigation so far has zeroed in on the role of some insider in the thefts. We will soon crack the case,” he said.
