Hate visiting your local doctor’s clinic for an appointment, info about vaccinations or details of your past medical history? Now, all this info can be sent to you either via SMS or email, and provide convenience without compromising on healthcare. Several doctors in the city have signed up for GetDoctorAppointment, a service that connects doctors and patients in a way that benefits the both. Using search and appointments engines that find doctors and book appointments online, the service also allows doctors to send SMS reminders for appointment, prescription, dosage and diet instructions. The system currently has 500 doctors registered and is looking to reach 50,000 in the next five years.

“The idea is to improve the healthcare industry in India and bridge the gap that currently exists with the help of technology,” says Neeraj Gulati, founder of GetDoctorAppoinment, adding that while doctors need to download a software and pay a nominal cost to be part of the system, patients get the service for free and ony have to sign up online.

The software also allows doctors to send reminders about appointments. Gulati explains, “It works especially well for pediatricians and gynaecologists, who need to remind infants and pregnant women regularly about their appointments as both categories require specific and standard healthcare.” Diabetics too can send doctors updates of their sugar levels and get their local physicians to change their diet plan accordingly.

The software records the patient’s entire medical history and the doctor’s treatment notes. If one isn’t satisfied with the doctor’s advise, he has the option of switching to another doctor or sending the treatment notes to another doctor for a second opinion. Patients can also be referred from one doctor to another for the next stage of treatment.
