Avengers Endgame director Anthony Russo confirms ‘Loki could absolutely still be alive’
Avengers Endgame director Anthony Russo has confirmed what many of us hoped for -- Loki could absolutely be alive in some alternate universe.
Avengers: Endgame gave us enough to discuss and speculate but there was one scene that the film and the audience allowed to fly under the radar. After we are done with that Captain America scene, and that Iron Man scene and that Black Widow scene, it is time to finally -- in the end -- discuss that Loki scene.

During the time heist staged by the Avengers in an attempt to steal the Infinity Stones before Thanos can destroy them, they land in the middle of the Battle of New York in 2012. In an attempt to retrieve the Tesseract and Loki’s sceptre before they can be returned to SHIELD, things go awry. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) -- disguised as a security personnel -- gets knocked on the head and ends up losing the Tesseract. It lands near Loki’s feet, and he promptly teleports out of there with the Tesseract.
To fix this, Tony and Steve Rogers have to then go back to the 70s to grab the Tesseract. Strangely, neither Loki nor the missing Tesseract circa 2012 are never mentioned again in the film. However, if we know Loki – a Loki with the Tesseract, no less – he will be wrecking havoc in some alternate universe somewhere.
And now, Avengers: Endgame director Anthony Russo has confirmed this too. In an interview to Los Angeles Times, he was asked whether Loki could be alive after the events of Endgame or if he’s still dead after Thanos unceremoniously killed him in Avengers: Infinity War. “Loki could absolutely still be alive in an alternate timeline,” Russo answered.
The time travel rules in Avengers: Endgame are very clear: Unless Steve manages to replace the stones and stop the Battle of New York redux from happening, an alternate timeline featuring Loki and the Tesseract is very much there. Will it fuel the beginning of the Loki TV show for Disney+? We will bet on it.
