The thriller, which also features Ben Affleck in a key role, narrates a rescue operation of US diplomats from Tehran during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis.

Other nominees in the category were Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty), Ang Lee (Life of Pi), Steven Spielberg (Lincoln) and Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained).

Christopher Waltz and Anne Hathaway walked away with the best performance by an actor and actress in a supporting role in a motion picture, respectively, at the 70th Golden Globe awards.
