Set in the 1950s, the drama focuses on a charismatic man known as "the master" of a faith-based organization and a young drifter who becomes his disciple as the organization takes hold.
It stars Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams and Philip Seymour Hoffman as the leader of the unusual religious group.
The Master, by the director of Magnolia and There Will Be Blood, is competing for the Golden Lion in the 69th Venice Film Festival, between August 29 and September 8.
