Paddington 2 has become the highest-rated film in the history of review aggregator site, Rotten Tomatoes. The film surpassed Toy Story 2’s record of 163 consecutive ‘fresh’ reviews to become the only film with a 100% score with 165 reviews counted. The record was briefly held by Lady Bird, but a lone ‘rotten’ review brought its score down to 99%.

Paul King, the director of both Paddington movies, expressed his gratitude to Rotten Tomatoes. “The Paddington films are a real labour of love. So many people pour their hearts and souls into them for months or even years, hand-crafting every last frame, and we are all incredibly grateful for the overwhelmingly positive response we’ve had so far. We hope it inspires people to go to the cinema to see for themselves if a talking animal film really can be any good, and whether Hugh Grant really can look devilishly handsome even while dressed as a nun. (Clue: yes.),” he said.

The first movie, based on Michael Bond’s children’s books featuring the lovable Paddington bear, was also a success with the critics. It scored a 98% rating based on 141 reviews. Both film have also been successful at the box office; the first earned $268 million worldwide, while Paddington 2’s current total stands at $155 million.

The Hindustan Times review said, “Paddington 2 has done what many franchises couldn’t: make a sequel about a brave bear brilliant, beautiful and better than the original.”

The film stars Ben Whishaw as the voice of Paddington bear and Hugh Grant, Jim Broadbent, Sally Hawkins and Brendan Gleeson in supporting roles.
