Without any prior warning -- no trailers, no images, not even a confirmed title -- The Cloverfield Paradox, the third in director/producer JJ Abrams’ science-fiction series, was released on Netflix. It’s keeping in line with the unique marketing Abrams used for the previous two entries -- 2008’s Cloverfield debuted after a spectacular trailer caught the attention of the internet, and 2016’s 10 Cloverfield Lane, was previously thought to be an entirely different movie until the title at the end turned it into a Cloverfield sequel. And now this.

For months, there were rumours online that God Particle, a typically secretive new movie by Abrams was in some way a part of the Cloverfield universe, but it was only a few hours before the Super Bowl that some people on Twitter started murmuring that the movie might be released on Netflix, that same day. A trailer was release, and two hours later, so was the movie.

The film is directed by Julius Onah and stars a diverse cast that includes Gugu Mbatha-Raw, David Oyelowo, Chris O’Dowd, Daniel Bruhl, Aksel Hennie, John Ortiz and Elizabeth Debicki.

You can check out other Super Bowl trailers for Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Avengers: Infinity War, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Skyscraper, Solo: A Star Wars Story and Red Sparrow by clicking on the titles.
