A ten-year-old schoolgirl was waylaid, raped and then strangulated to death in Shankargarh on Saturday, police said.
The body of the girl was found in a drain near the village. After information by some villagers police nabbed the 22-year-old accused from the same village who confessed to his crime.
Police said the girl, a resident of Bendo village of Karchhana, lived with her maternal grandfather and studied in class 4 at a private school in Shankargarh. When the girl did not return home on Saturday afternoon, her family searched for her and even went to her school where they were told that she did not attend school on Saturday, police said.
In the evening, Shankargarh villagers spotted the girl’s body lying in a drain. Police reached the scene and questioned the villagers. Some of them informed that a youth of the same village was spotted with the girl in the morning.
Station House Officer (SHO), Shankargarh, Bhuvnesh Chaubey said the youth was rounded up for questioning and he confessed that he abducted the girl while she was on her way to school in the morning.
“He [the accused] said he took the girl to a deserted place where he raped her before strangulating her to death. The accused then threw the body in the drain,” the SHO added.
On the complaint of the girl’s family, a first information report (FIR) has been lodged against the culprit.
Injuries have been found on the girl’s private parts and her body has been sent for autopsy for a detailed report, the SHO added.
The accused was earlier arrested with crude bombs and was out on bail, the SHO said.
