5 family members killed in road mishap in Karnal

The road accident involving two cars, a truck and a mini-truck took place on the national highway-44 near Samana Bahu village in Karnal accident on Thursday afternoon

Five members of a family, including three women, were killed in a road accident involving two cars, a truck and a mini-truck on the national highway-44 near Samana Bahu village in Karnal accident on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased have been identified as Rajwant Kaur, 50, her son Happy Singh, 20, daughter Manwinder Kaur, 23, son-in- law Harvinder Singh, 25, and sister Jasvinder Kaur (38).

The police said the victims were travelling in a Swift Dzire and were going to a relative’s house in Sambhi village of Karnal district, when their vehicle was suddenly hit by another car coming from behind.

The driver lost control of the car which jumped over the divider to the other side of the road and was hit by a speeding truck coming from the opposite direction. The other car also hit a mini-truck which also crossed the divider and got overturned. Two people who were travelling in the mini-truck sustained minor injuries.

Rajwant and Happy belonged to Dariyanpur in Yamunanagar, her daughter Manwinder was married in Khanpur, Kurukshetra, and her sister was married in Dera Bassi in Punjab.

When contacted, Butana police station in-charge Vikrant Singh said an eyewitness told the police that a car hit the swift desire and a mini-truck from behind and their drivers lost control and both the vehicles jumped over the divider.

He said all the victims died on the spot and their bodies were sent to the Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College and Hospital, Karnal, for postmortem.

The cops have informed their family members and registered a case under Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the unknown driver of the car that hit the Swift Dzire and the driver of the truck. Both the drivers fled the spot immediately after the accident.

Police said efforts are on to arrest the two drivers/.
