Actor Mithun Chakraborty meets RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat in Nagpur
In a development which will make heads turn in this election season, Bollywood actor and former Trinamool Rajya Sabha member Mithun Chakraborty met Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat and other senior functionaries of the organisation in Nagpur on Thursday. Chakraborty also had breakfast with the RSS chief.
RSS sources said Chakraborty, whose name figured in the Saradha chit fund scam, landed in Nagpur from Mumbai Thursday morning. His meeting the RSS chief, which was termed as a ‘courtesy visit’ by Prasad Mahankar, Vidarbha Pracharak of the organization, seems like it has a political tinge to it – especially at a time when most of the top opposition leaders in Bengal are facing ED or CBI probe in one case or another.
The Bollywood actor is learnt to have spent an hour at the RSS headquarters and then visited the Hedgewar memorial. He was accompanied by Mahankar.
Chakraborty, who was once associated with the Maoist movement in Bengal, later earned fame as an accomplished actor after he debuted in the Mrinal Sen’s award winning movie ‘Mrigayaa’.
Later, he was known to be close to CPM and particularly with senior leader and former sports minister late Subhash Chakraborty. But Chakraborty was never active in politics during the period.
When Mamata Banerjee came to power in Bengal, his leaning shifted towards the Trinamool. He was later nominated as Rajya Sabha member in 2014, but resigned within two years citing health issues. He was summoned by Enforcement Directorate in connection with the Saradha scam.
Chakraborty campaigned actively campaign for the BJP in the ensuing Assembly elections and there was a buzz that he might join the party.
Details about the Chakraborty’s Thursday meeting with Bhagwat are not yet known.Vikas Telang, the office in-charge of RSS headquarters, said the the actor was apprised with several works undertaken by the Sangh parivar and its role for “nation building”.
