After Congress's poor performance in five state elections which included the loss of Punjab to Aam Aadmi Party, the Congress's role as the principal opposition party in the country has been challenged. Countering Trinamool supremo and West Bengal chief Mamata Banerjee's jibe that there is no point in depending on the Congress, West Bengal Congress president Adhir Chowdhury said Congress has 700 MLAs across India.

"Does Didi have it? Congress has 20 per cent of the Opposition's total vote share. Does she have it? She's saying this to please BJP and act as its agent. She says things like this to stay relevant," Adhir Chowdhury said.

Following this, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Sunday posted data on which party has how many MLAs in the country. Going by that data, Congress has 753 MLAs, which is only second to the BJP which has 1,443 MLAs. The Punjab election has given a leg up to AAP's MLA count as now Arvind Kejriwal's party has 156 MLAs, which is only fourth in the rank, following Trinamool which has 236 MLAs.

The Congress Working Committee on Sunday met and deliberated on the results of the five state elections. Accepting that the results are a cause of concern, the working committee urged interim president Sonia Gandhi to lead the party from the front. This comes amid reports of rebellion inside the party following the poor performance. An ANI report claimed the rebellion group of 23 leaders had suggested Mukul Wasnik's name for the post of the president of the party, which was turned down.
