A first information report was filed on Tuesday in connection with an AI-generated deep fake video impersonating Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay that surfaced on social media platforms including Facebook asking people in Hindi to get in touch with a mobile number for financial help, the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CBCID) said.

CBCID in a statement on Wednesday said that they have requested Meta to take down the video and approached it seeking information of the fake ID.

It is ascertained that many of these videos were shared on Pakistan based Facebook IDs, the CBCID said. Prima facie revealed that several similar such videos of CM Vijay were circulated.

“Investigation is in progress to identify the perpetrators and also to ensure that the false content be removed from social media platforms at the earliest,” the agency said.

CBCID also urged the public not to respond to any phone numbers or join any groups. “Such videos are not genuine and are deep fake videos fabricated by the scamsters to cheat people,” it said.
