‘Chai pi lo’ aunty is now an international obsession

A woman asking her “fraands” to drink tea must have invariably popped up on your social media feed and now she all over the internet.

Somvati Mahawar, who casually stares at the camera and utters the simple line, has become the queen of memes. Not only that, she is now being called the “chai wali aunty” by the internet peeps.

“Hello fraands … chai pi lo ... Garam hai,” she effortlessly says in the self-shot video, which first appeared on the internet in May.

And, that’s all it took for the “chai wali aunty” to get famous.

There are now hundreds of memes and jokes inspired by Mahawar’s “chai pi lo” request floating on the internet.

Mumbai Police, famous for their cheeky tweets, kept their tradition alive by tapping on social media’s viral content and turning into a lesson.

“Hello Fraaands! Helmet pehan lo... to have a Safe-Tea at home!” the force tweeted on June 13.

The tweet got over 3,200 shares and 8209 likes.

Surprisingly, Mahawar’s fame is not limited to India.

US-based Ben Stern posted a 10-second clip on Facebook on June 14, imitating Mahawar’s now famous line. The 33-year-old’s spoof garnered over 1,500 likes and was shared more than 2,900 people on the social media site.

Stern did not just stop at one video. The graduate of Columbia University and Yale Law School posted four more short clips, mocking Mahawar.
