Samajwadi Party leader Dimple Yadav, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minster Akhilesh Yadav's wife, on Monday took oath as Lok Sabha MP after a magnificent victory in the Mainpuri bypolls in Uttar Pradesh last week. The seat was vacated following the death of her father-in-law Mulayam Singh Yadav in October. She had defeated her BJP rival - Raghuraj Singh Shakya - by more than two lakh votes in the Samajwadi Party stronghold.

A video was posted by the Sansad TV where she was seen reading out the oath. The 44-year-old leader is the first woman MP from Mainpuri. The winter session of parliament started last week.

“I always maintained Mainpuri voters will create history and they did. This is the victory of netaji (the late Mulayam Singh Yadav) and is in fact the tribute paid by Mainpuri voters to their departed leader,” she had said on Thursday after the big win. Mulayam Singh Yadav is fondly remembered as "Netaji". Mayawati's BSP and the Congress had not contested the seat.

Akhilesh Yadav, who had quit as the Lok Sabha MP in March to deliver in his new role as the opposition leader in the UP assembly, had hit out at the BJP over "negative politics". "Voters have endorsed the politics of Netaji (his father) and development he did in Mainpuri, we will take it forward. The administration created pressure but voters defied it," he said on Thursday.

Ahead of the Mainpuri bypolls, Akhilesh and his uncle Shivpal had also settled differences with his uncle Shivpal Yadav. It was said that a majority of votes for Dimple came from his stronghold - Jaswantnagar.

“Uncle Shivpal Yadav made us stand against all tactics by local administration here. I am thankful to voters of Jaswant Nagar, the constituency of Shivpal Yadav, for contributing most to the party win here. I thank voters of my assembly seat Karhal, voters in Kisni, Mainpuri City and Bhongaon for support,” Akhilesh said, thanking him on Thursday.
