A 21-year-old student shot himself with his father’s pistol at his home in Hyderabad early on Tuesday after he failed to crack the JEE (Mains) examination, the police said.
The body of the student was found in a pool of blood on his bed at his Neredmet residence of Malkajgiri area in the morning.
“He shot himself on his forehead with the pistol belonging to his father Meherdin, a retired army jawan working as a security guard with a private bank,” Neredmet police inspector A Narasimha Swamy said.
Sahil, who appeared for the recently held Class 12 board examination of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) as a private candidate, took coaching with Aakash Institute for the JEE exam.
However, Sahil could not qualify in the entrance examination, results of which were declared on Monday night. This apparently led to his father scolding him for not putting in his best efforts in the exam for admission to Indian Institutes of Technology or IITs.
“His failure in the entrance examination and reprimand from his father could have led to a depression in Sahil. After everybody slept on Monday night, he took his father’s pistol and shot himself dead in his bedroom,” Swamy said.
Police have booked a case and are investigating it under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which deals with suicide.
