Child among 9 dead as massive fire breaks out at Kolkata hotel

A fire broke out at a hotel at 15H Mirza Ghalib Street in central Kolkata around 2 am on Wednesday, fire brigade sources said.

Nine people, including six men, two women and a child, died after a massive fire broke out at a hotel on Mirza Ghalib Street in central Kolkata around 2 am on Wednesday.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known.

Hotel fire in Bengal's Tarapith

This comes two days after a separate hotel fire in West Bengal’s Tarapith in Birbhum district left several people dead and others injured. The blaze broke out at a hotel on Monday and was suspected to have been triggered by a short circuit, officials said.

Birbhum Superintendent of Police Vidit Raj Bhundesh said rescue teams reached the hotel after the fire was reported and evacuated people from the building using ladders.

"Neither smoke nor flames were visible from the outside. Police and fire brigade teams arrived at the scene; 22 people were rescued using ladders, and 11 others were sent to the hospital...7 people have lost their lives in this incident," he told reporters.

Officials said 28 people were rescued from the hotel and survived, while seven others were undergoing treatment. Eight people were rescued from the building but later died. Five of the victims were from Meghalaya, while three were from Alipurduar.

The hotel operators have been taken into custody after police registered an FIR.
