District police officials quoted locals as saying that the boys, all adivasis, were walking along the track on their way home from a seasonal fair beside the railway line. “It was very foggy when the mishap happened about 2am,” a police officer said.

Northeast Frontier Railway officials said there was no scheduled halt for passenger trains near the spot where the children were run over “due to poor visibility”.

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal condoled the deaths and directed irrigation minister Ranjit Dutta to visit Borgong and talk to the victims’ families.
