Congress leader Sharmistha Mukherjee has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) “dirty tricks department” of circulating a morphed photograph showing the former president and her father Pranab Mukherjee in an RSS cap and saluting like one of its workers.

“See, this is exactly what I was fearing & warned my father about. Not even few hours have passed, but BJP/RSS dirty tricks dept is at work in full swing!” Sharmistha said on Twitter late on Thursday.

She retweeted the photograph posted by Ruchi Sharma, the vice-president of women’s wing of Congress’ Haryana unit.

Sharmistha on Wednesday wrote that the veteran leader’s decision had given the BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh “full handle” to plant rumours and false stories.

She also cautioned her father that his speech will be “will be forgotten”, but the visuals “will be circulated with fake statements”.

Mukherjee’s visit to the RSS headquarters had evoked sharp responses with several leaders of his party, including Sharmistha criticising his decision.

Sharmistha, who heads the Mahila Congress and the media department of the party’s Delhi unit, also responded to BJP leader Subramanian Swamy’s comments backing her.

“This is something you must grow up to. My own daughter doesn’t agree with my views and I don’t agree with hers. But we are a happy family. We must learn that individuals have opinions,” Swamy was reported as saying.

Sharmistha said she had no problem expressing differences with her father in public.

The former president said that attempts to define India’s nationhood on the basis of religion would “dilute our nationality” in his speech at the RSS headquarters in Nagpur.

He added that “the soul of India resides in pluralism and tolerance,” in what some analysts and politicians saw as a strong message to the ideological parent of the BJP.
