Install CCTVs, migrant workers’ landlords told in Kashmir

Amid a string of targeted terrorist attacks on non-locals in Jammu & Kashmir, the Srinagar Police on Friday advised migrant labourers not to roam in “vulnerable localities” at night and urged landlords to install CCTVs outside homes rented out to them.

The police also dismissed claims that non-locals were directed to vacate Srinagar and their employers were asked to ensure they reached their hometown safely. “This is incorrect,” the Srinagar Police said, in response to the above claim by a Twitter user.

“Outside labourers are only advised not to roam at night in vulnerable localities & landlords have been advised to install CCTVs, where they work/stay,” the police said.

Anantnag, Shopian, Pulwama and Kulgam districts in south Kashmir and Srinagar city have reported maximum such attacks.

The police also said “these are routine measures for security”. “In any case, seasonal labourers every year move with the onset of winter.”

In April, deputy commissioners in the Valley had issued orders, directing shopkeepers to install high definition CCTV cameras outside their establishments in view of the rising targeted attacks. Srinagar police had also warned of penal action if the CCTV installation orders were not complied with.

As many as eight non-locals have been killed in targeted terrorist attacks in Jammu & Kashmir this year.

On November 10, the body of a migrant labourer was found in Soura area of Srinagar. The police suspect it to be a case of targeted killing.

A day later, two labourers from Bihar and Nepal were injured after they were shot at in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district. One of them succumbed to injuries in the hospital.

On November 3, two migrant workers at a private school at Bondialgam in Anantnag were shot at by terrorists. Terror outfit The Resistance Front (TRF), which police claim is an offshoot of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Last month, two migrant workers from Uttar Pradesh were killed after terrorists hurled a grenade at them in Shopian district.
