A middle-aged fugitive rape suspect’s property could be confiscated and bank accounts frozen in efforts to catch him after he allegedly raped a 10-year-old girl and shot a video of the brutal assault in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch in September.
An officer said on Wednesday police will obtain a court order within a week to seize his properties.
Cops have already impounded four vehicles and seized three buffaloes owned by the 52-year-old suspect, a father of 13, of Salwah village in Mendhar sub-division.
He is on the run since the crime became known after the video shot on a cell phone surfaced on social media about a week ago.
“The girl is from a poor family and this man took her to an abandoned house, where he brutally raped her and shot a video clip of around 12 minutes,” the officer said.
The girl’s father is a mason who worked for the suspect.
After the video emerged, relatives and parents of the Class 6 student approached police. She narrated her nightmarish ordeal before a magistrate and a warrant was issued against the suspect.
“He has two wives and 13 children. His eldest son is around 28 and eldest daughter around 20. We are trying to catch him,” the officer said.
Police questioned his sons for hours to get some leads about their father.
