Mob justice: Alleged rapist of 11-year-old lynched in Shillong

Police have arrested a landlord and his son in Shillong after a mob lynched his tenant who allegedly raped his minor daughter.

A 30-year-old man, who had allegedly raped a minor girl, was lynched by an angry mob in Shillong on Sunday.

The victim, Yakub Khan Nongkynrih, had allegedly raped the 11-year-old daughter of his landlord several times and even took pictures and made videos of the acts on his phone. The man was staying alone as a tenant.

“On Sunday, the house owner’s son is said to have seen the clips following which the victim was allegedly beaten up by family members of the girl,” said Davis NR Marak, superintendant of police East Khasi Hills district.

When the police reached the scene at Nongkseh village in upper Shillong around 6:00 pm, a large crowd had gathered and there was a scuffle with the police who tried to rescue the injured man.

“Two of our team also sustained minor injuries before we were able to rescue the heavily injured man and take him to hospital. But he succumbed to his injuries on the way,” Marak said.

According to the police, the victim sustained multiple injuries including head injuries. Preliminary investigation suggests he might have died due to perforation of his lungs by broken ribs.

“We have arrested the house owner and his son and are conducting investigations. A case of murder has also been lodged,” the SP said.

Police are yet to find out the backgrounds of the tenant and the landlord.
