Addressing the first convocation of the university, Modi said many people see police officers in uniform with a sense of fear, whereas they see those in the defence forces are regarded as protectors. "This image change has undergone a change during Covid-19 when policemen were seen giving food and medicines to the people. We have seen during the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown, many policemen in uniform gave food and medicines to the needy. People saw the humane face of the force.”

He further said technology has now become a potential weapon in the security apparatus. "Mere physical training is not enough to be in security forces, now specially abled people can also contribute to the security sector despite not being physically fit,” he added.

Shah said Gujarat was the first state in the country to computerise police stations during Modi's rule as the then chief minister. “The police force was trained through software along with connecting jails and forensic science labs,” he added.

Earlier in the day, Modi took part in a roadshow starting from Chiloda to Dehgam in Gandhinagar district. He rode in an open jeep with Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel.

On Friday, less than 24 hours after his party won a historic mandate in Uttar Pradesh and retained power in three other states, Modi hit the campaign trail in his home state with a grand roadshow in Ahmedabad.

Before the roadshow, Modi had left the Raj Bhavan in a car and shifted to an open jeep on reaching Dehgam. These roadshows are being seen as Modi kickstarting his party's campaign for the Gujarat Assembly election scheduled to be held in December.

In the evening, he will inaugurate Khel Mahakumbh, a sporting event.
