Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to dedicate Smritivan - a museum built as a tribute to those who lost their lives in the earthquake on January 26, 2001 - in Gujarat's Kutch on Sunday. The earthquake killed over 12,000 people in Kutch. PM Modi had resolved to build a museum during his tenure as the chief minister of Gujarat. The museum is spread over 11,500 square meters and has eight blocks and a gallery, along with a simulator theatre.

About Smritivan Memorial Project:

The Smritivan memorial project - spread across 470 acres - is built atop Bhujiyo Dungar at Bhuj, Kutch. The museum has eight blocks, which have been named as: Rebirth, Rediscover, Restore, Rebuild, Rethink, Relive and Renew. The local stone of Kutch has been used to construct the walls of the museums and their floors.

Phase one of the project with 170 acres of land comprises 50 check-dams, sun-point, pathways with an overall length of 8 km, internal Roads of 1.2 km length, restoration of an over 300-year-old fort wall, one MW solar power plant, parking suitable for 3000 visitors, and earthquake museum in 11,500 square meters. Along with this, names of the victims who lost their lives in the tragedy have been inscribed on the wall of the check-dam.

According to a release, the journey of Bhuj post the 2001 earthquake is narrated in the form of a presentation in addition to providing a glimpse of the rich Harappan civilization, the science of seismology, heritage, culture and art of Gujarat, and real-time emergency situations through a control room.

Around 50 audio-visual models, holograms, interactive projections, and virtual reality have been used to provide a world-class experience to the visitors at the museum. A simulator theatre is also built for visitors to experience earthquake in real-time.

One of its galleries will also allow the visitors to pay their respects to the people who lost their lives in the tragedy by lighting up a digital flame through touch panels which will then travel through digital led walls up to the ceiling and form one united light. The light will be visible all across Bhuj.
