President Pranab Mukherjee congratulates France’s Emmanuel Macron

Pro-European centrist Emmanuel Macron won France’s landmark presidential election by defeating far-right National Front candidate Marine Le Pen on May 7.

President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday congratulated Emmanuel Macron, the President-elect of France, on his victory and said that India looks forward to strengthen bilateral ties.

“I warmly congratulate you on your election to the office of President of the French Republic,” Mukherjee was quoted as saying in a statement issued on Thursday

President Mukherjee said also said that India values its strategic partnership with France and stressed that the friendship between the two nations would continue to strengthen in the years to come.

In the congratulatory message, President Mukherjee said he was confident that the “long-standing friendship, mutual trust and understanding” between India and France would always thrive.

India looked forward to further consolidating the “multifaceted strategic partnership” with the new government, he said.

“In giving you a decisive mandate, the people of France have demonstrated their confidence in your leadership and vision,” he said.
