The news report — Goyal ‘suffocated’ by extent of corruption — in the edition dated October 3, 2017, incorrectly attributed certain comments to the Minister of Railways and Coal, Piyush Goyal.
At no stage did Goyal say, “I feel suffocated with the level of corruption in the room” and “the level of corruption is quite high and there is no transparency in the planning of the projects”, the railway ministry said in a response on Wednesday.
In fact, the minister observed at the meeting that the per-kilometre cost of the elevated rail corridors from CST to Panvel and Bandra to Virar were higher than the per-kilometre cost of the Metro project.
He wanted a thorough and diligent examination of the components of the unit cost to ensure economic and efficient delivery of the public services.
Goyal emphasised that due care should be taken while preparing cost estimates of rail projects and keeping them realistic to ensure optimum utilisation of scarce public resources for the benefit of the people of India, the ministry said.
