Restrictions imposed in parts of Kashmir to thwart protests

Restrictions have been imposed in parts of Srinagar and Kashmir’s Shopian district to thwart a march called by separatists to protest the killings of civilians in Shopian by forces.
Police said free movement of people and vehicles have been restricted in northern parts of Srinagar (Old City), Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Yasin Malik’s bastion Maisuma and Shopian district.

Besides senior separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani, moderate leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also has been placed under house arrest for the past one week.
A spokesman of Mirwaiz in Srinagar said that the leader will ‘defy’ restrictions around his house and march towards Shopian.
However, JKLF’s Yasin Malik, who was in hiding to evade arrest, managed to reach Shopian.
“Early morning, after a two-day long and tedious journey and hiding, Malik reached Jamia Masjid, Shopian, where he will lead a peaceful protest against the gruesome killings by forces,” an aide of Malik said.
A police officer said they will take action if Malik comes out of the mosque to breach the restrictions.
A spokesman of Malik said the mosque has been sealed from all sides by police and CRPF, and all lanes and roads leading to the Jamia Masjid have been blocked by barricades and vehicles of the forces.
Shopian has been restive since the January 24 encounter between militants and security forces in Chaigund village. Five civilians were killed since the incident.
