Six men have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping and raping a Class 12 girl and then throwing her in a pond in Julana township of Haryana’s Jind, police said on Monday, in another incident of rising number of crime against women in the state.

The accused have been identified as Deepak and Praveen, who have been booked for gang-raping the victim, and Kapil, Sanjeev, Chhotu and Naseeb, on whom the police have pressed the charges of molestation. The crime was committed on Saturday.

“All the six accused have been arrested and produced in court that sent them in judicial custody on Sunday,” deputy superintendent of police Pushpa Khatri, who is leading the investigations in the case, said.

Khatri said they registered a case against the men under sections of rape, criminal intimidation, sexual harassment and attempt to murder of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Children From Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Police said two of the accused abducted the victim, who was sleeping in her house, and took her to a secluded spot where they gang-raped her. Four other men, who were already present at the spot, also molested the victim and attempted to rape her, they added.

When she shouted for help, the accused tied her hands, gagged her and then threw her in a pond, the police said.

“The incident happened very close to the victim’s house. As per the complaint received, the relatives of the victim heard her cries for help and noticed the accused throwing her in the pond. They came for her help and saved her life. But the accused managed to flee the spot by then,” Khatri said.

“The medical examination of the victim was conducted which has indicated the possibility of rape. Further samples have been sent to the police forensic lab in Madhuban and their reports are awaited,” she added.

She also said the victim is stable.

Crime against women has been rising in Haryana where there has been a 47% increase in the number of rape cases in Haryana since September 2014 to August 2015, according to data tabled by the government in the state assembly in September.

The data shows the 961 cases of rape were registered by the police from September 2014 to September 2015. The number increased to 1,026 in 2015-2016, 1,193 in 2016-17 and 1,413 in 2017-2018.
