Under-construction building collapses in Chennai; 1 killed, 32 injured

A migrant labourer was killed and 32 others were injured when an overloaded scaffolding of an under-construction building collapsed here, police said on Sunday.
Chief minister K Palaniswami expressed grief on the death of the man and announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of the deceased.
The incident took place around 7.15 pm on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Bablu. Twenty-seven people have been rescued and are undergoing treatment at various hospitals, while five were treated as out-patients, Tamil Nadu Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan said.
He said the state government would bear the medical expenses of the 16 people undergoing treatment at Apollo hospitals in Chennai.
Chennai Police Commissioner A K Vishwanathan, who visited the spot, said strict action would be taken against those responsible for the incident.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the IPC, including those for causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others and causing death by negligence, he said.
No arrests or detention have been made yet in this connection, another police official told PTI, adding, “We are waiting for the debris to be cleared.”
The Kanchipuram district officials, police, and fire services personnel are working round-the-clock.
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel also joined the rescue operations late last night.
