Despite pressure from student leaders and hostel inmates, the varsity authorities successfully managed to evict the illegal inmates and get 34 rooms being occupied by them vacated. The authorities have now locked the rooms with warnings of strict action against anyone who dares to break open the room and will be allotting them to the new students who have been waiting for the past quite some time to get possession of rooms allotted to them.

Amidst continuous rumours about the raid being doubtful due to lack of adequate security back-up and mounting pressure of the student leaders, the varsity authorities raided the KPUC hostel in the first half of the day itself.

Well prepared for the resistance, the officials soon singled out the rooms being occupied by illegal inmates thanks to a list prepared in advance and soon got their belongings out of the room. Even as some inmates tried to resist the move by raising slogans, the cops swung into action forcing them to back down and ensured that the drive got completed peacefully.

It is to be recalled that varsity authorities had been planning to raid the hostels to evict illegal inmates for the past many weeks, but due to unavailability of police force the drive had to be postponed a number of times.

On Thursday too, the officials got ready for the raid and even had cops present.

But before the raid could be carried out, the policemen had to leave for the High Court premises where the 'Munshis' (advocate clerks) suddenly went on strike.

This had led to yet another postponement of the drive then but the determined varsity officials— specially upset over the recent ruckus created by some of these illegal inmates of KPUC Hostel a few weeks back when they thrashed a newcomer and misbehaved with the Warden— ensured that the task was carried out with precision and all secrecy on Friday. On being contacted, Proctor Prof Jata Shankar confirmed the drive and eviction of 105 illegal inmates. "The 34 rooms vacated during the drive have now been locked. We have made it clear to one and all that strict penal action will follow any attempt to break the locks and occupy the rooms again. The varsity will suspend and rusticate any student who dares to ignore the warning and break the locks," he said.

Prof Jata Shankar also issued a warning to the illegal inmates of other AU hostels to vacate the rooms or face strict action in the days to come.
