At least 11 people were killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up inside Baghdad's massive Shiite Baratha mosque on Friday despite a major security crackdown in the capital, a source said.

The blast, which also wounded 25 people, came just an hour before the main weekly Muslim prayers when the mosque would have been filled with thousands of worshippers.

On April 7, a triple suicide bombing by men dressed as women targeted worshippers just as they were leaving the Baratha mosque, killing 90 and wounding 175.

A security source said the police were exploring the possibility that this time the bomber may again have been dressed as a woman or as a cleric to avoid stringent security checks put in place at the mosque after the April bombings.

The new blast came despite a security crackdown that saw vehicles banned from the capital's streets during prayer time and tens of thousands of Iraqi and US soldiers out on patrol.
