Fifteen pilgrims were killed and five injured in a head-on collision between a van and a milk van in the wee hours near Tirunelvelli.

Fifteen pilgrims were killed and five injured in a head-on collision between a van and a milk van in the wee hours near Tirunelvelli on Tuesday.

The van carrying 19 people and the milk van collided at Sankar nagar at 3 am.

While 13 persons died on the spot, two persons succumbed to injuries at Tiruneleveli Medical College Hospital.

The mishap occurred when the pilgrims were returning home here after visiting a temple in Kumbakonam, police said.

Police suspect that the van driver was over speeding when the mishap took place.
