Murbad town in Thane district remained tense on Thursday. At 1pm, angry villagers placed the body of a 15-year-old girl, who had ended her life because she had been raped, outside the Tokawada police station. They claimed the police were protecting the four accused in the case and refused to cremate the girl until they were arrested.

At 7pm, the villagers finally took the body for the final rites after the police managed to arrest one of the accused, Dattu Thakare, and charge him with abetting the crime.

Four police teams are looking for the main accused, Bhagwan Thakre, and two of his accomplices - Suresh Thakare and a woman, whose name was not disclosed. The victim was a resident of Godyachiwadi, located 3 km from Tokawada village.

On December 5, Bhagwan had allegedly raped her when she had gone to fetch water. Inspector Bhasker Jadhav said: "The girl went into a shock. She did not tell her parents about the incident. On Tuesday, when no one was at home, she consumed pesticide."

Thirty minutes later, she started feeling nauseous and experiencing stomachache. Her mother, who had returned home, called neighbours for help and they rushed the girl to the Tokawada primary health centre.
