16 die in Tamil Nadu road accident

At least 16 people were killed and 10 injured when an overloaded goods carrier collided head-on with a public transport vehicle in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu , police said.

At least 16 people were killed and 10 injured when an overloaded goods carrier collided head-on with a public transport vehicle in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu on Friday, police said.

The accident took place in Perungudi Bramhappatti village of Virudhunagar, 450 km south of state capital Chennai.

"A small goods carrier with 25 passengers collided with a public transport vehicle killing 15 people, including 6 women, on the spot. One person succumbed to his injuries at a government hospital later," Inspector General of police Sanjeev Kumar told IANS.

"The passengers in the goods carrier were construction workers who were travelling crammed in the vehicle. They were returning home after taking part in a political rally, according to our information. The injured are being treated in a government hospital here," he added.
