At least 17 people were killed and 23 were injured after their bus skidded off the road and smashed into a tree in northwestern Thailand on Saturday, police said.

The bus carrying 42 female sewing workers of a mattress company was travelling in Kanchanaburi, 130 kms northwest of Bangkok, police said, adding the bus driver was among the dead.
"The bus had a brake problem. It slipped and crashed into the tree," a police official said, adding police were investigating the cause of the accident.
