17 die of encephalitis in Assam

At least 17 people, including children, have died due to Japanese encephalitis in the upper Assam district of Sivasagar this month. Over 40 affected people are being treated in hospitals, joint director of health NN Bhuyan told PTI in Sivasagar.

The disease was spreading in Geleki, Demow and Khelua areas of the district, which is encephalitis prone, and a high-level expert team visited the areas.

The disease has also affected people in nearby Dibrugarh and Dhemaji districts, he said.
