18 killed in Karnataka road mishap

18 members of a marriage party, including the bride, were killed and 20 injured when a mini bus collided head on with a state-owned transport bus at Halur in north Karnataka.

Eighteen members of a marriage party, including the bride, were killed on Friday and 20 injured when a mini bus collided head on with a state-owned transport bus at Halur in north Karnataka.

A Bellary district police official told IANS on phone that the deceased included eight women, six children and four men, one of them mini-bus driver.

The injured were admitted to hospitals at Bellary, Chitradurga and Kudligi. Five of them are reported to be in critical condition.

"The accident took place on the National Highway 13 when the tempo, proceeding to Bangalore from Talikote, joined the highway from a bypass road. The Karnataka State Transport bus was bound to Bangalore from Bilgi," the official said.

The victims were returning after the marriage in a nearby village. Some of the victims were from Bangalore.
