At 6 pm, the cell received a tip-off that some students were seen consuming drugs on the college campus.

“A team from the Azad Maidan ANC unit found nine boys at the spot. On conducting a search we found two in possession of drugs while the others were picked on suspicion of consumption,” said Vishwas Nangre-Patil, Deputy Police Commissioner (ANC).

“While two who have been arrested for possession of 2 gm of cocaine each, seven others, whose names have been with held to protect their identities, have been detained for consumption,” Patil said. “They have been taken to JJ hospital for medical examination. Their blood and urine samples would be taken and the ones reported positive would be arrested,” he added.

Patil also confirmed that the nine students belong to Bhavans College and were consuming drugs on the college campus.

The ANC have been planning to conduct surprise raids on some south Mumbai colleges as they had been getting tip-offs regarding drug peddling and drug consumption in the campus. “We had knowledge that drugs were being consumption on the campuses of some colleges and were to conducted raids there,” said an ANC officer, requesting anonymity for protocol reasons. “We conduct regular campaigns in all colleges educating students on the dangers of drugs.”
