Babu, 17, committed suicide by hanging himself at his house on the outskirts of the city, as he was depressed at having failed in three subjects in his higher secondary examinations, police said.

The state school examination board results were declared Monday.

Babu, a student of a government school in Chromepet, hung himself when he was alone at home, police said.

A 19-year-old girl committed self-immolation in Ramanathapuram district, about 600 km south of here, due to failure in the higher secondary examinations, police said.

After the exam results were announced on Monday, Priya set herself ablaze when she was alone in the house. She succumbed to burn injuries on the way to a government hospital in Madurai.
