The Bhiwandi Crime Branch on Monday night busted a notorious dacoit gang involved in several cases in and around Thane.
Three people — Kurla resident Mubbarakali Sheikh alias Tyul (23), Bhiwandi residents Fatehmohammed Chaudhari (28) and Fulchand Chaudhari (22) — were arrested at a godown in Bhiwandi.
“We got information that Sheikh and his gang were planning to loot one Novelty Logistic’s godown,” said Thane’s additional commissioner of police Prashant Burde.
Two others managed to escape from the spot. On interrogation, it was found that they were also involved in another dacoity in Bhiwandi and Rabale. The accused would identify isolated godowns and under-construction sites in desolate areas.
“They had fled with 1,600 kg of nickel worth Rs 20 lakh from Shreejee Impex Asian Traders’ godown in Bhiwandi which we have recovered. They also robbed nine tonnes of iron rods from an under-construction site of the Raheja Builders in Rabale,” Burde said.
The trio had sold the nickel to a Thane businessman Vinod Jain (45), who has also been arrested. The police are trying to detect more such cases.
The police is also trying to check if Sheikh, originally from Surat, has any criminal record there. The accused were produced in court on Tuesday and have been remanded in police custody till August 8.
