THREE PEOPLE, including two women, were kiled when a hand-grenade blew up in Neeva village under Dhumanganj police station on the Republic Day eve on Wednesday.
The incident took place when some people were trying to extract brass from a live grenade.
Bhuri (50), wife of Phool Chand, her daughter Vinita, Sandeep, Kusum (25), wife of Santosh, and Beena were in the process of extracting brass from a live grenade in the village.
Police suspect they picked up the live grenade from a practice range frequented by armymen near the village.
They claimed that the grenade exploded when it was hammered. Bhuri died on the spot, while others sustained serious injuries.
Initially, the villagers did not pay any attention to the blast owing to the site being near the practice area of armymen. However, on hearing cries of help of the injured, fellow villagers rushed to their aid and tried to secure medical attention.
They were admitted to SRN Hospital. Sources said Sandeep and Beena died while being rushed to hospital. Kusum and Vinita are under treatment. Police are investigating the incident.
When contacted, Dhumanganj police station officer Shail Kumar Singh said, “We have received information about the blast and death of three persons in it.”
