A police spokesman said a joint patrol party was fired upon by militants at Aab-Ghar, Tral, over 50 km south of capital Srinagar.

"The patrol party retaliated the fire and in the ensuing encounter three unidentified militants have been killed," he said.

The spokesman said the identity of the killed militants is still being ascertained.

"One SLR, one carbine, one pistol and grenades and other ammunition have been recovered from the slain militants," he said.

The five-phase assembly election in the state is scheduled to begin November 25 and Tral segment goes for polls on December 9. Separatist leaders have called for an election boycott across the state.
