Saying it was meant to serve as a deterrent, a court in Haryana has jailed five teachers for seven years for siphoning off funds meant for providing mid-day meals to government school students.
The teachers, including a headmaster, have been charged with siphoning off funds for providing mid-day meals to poor students of a government primary school near Safidon town in Jind district, 250 km from here.
Additional district and sessions judge S.K. Goel, who held headmaster Ramphal and four teachers guilty, said the punishment was being given to serve as a deterrent to other teachers from taking liberty with funds meant for students.
The teachers were accused of showing more students than the actual number. The students shown to be in the government school were actually studying in different private schools of the area.
The village headman had complained against the teachers. He alleged that the meals were neither cooked nor served as the students did not even exist on the rolls of the school.
