They were cleaning and painting the tracks ahead of Mughalsarai divisional railway manager Vidya Bhushan’s inspection to assess the possibility of a foot-overbridge at the station.

Bhushan said it seemed the five persons were run over while crossing the down line track. They would not have seen the super fast express coming in the dense fog that had enveloped the area, he said.

Bhushan said an inquiry had been ordered and the kin of the deceased would be compensated according to railway rules.
The accident disrupted traffic on the line that connects Howrah and Delhi, but was restored by 3 pm, Bhushan said.

The dead were identified as senior section engineer Nathun Prasad and contract labourers Ram Ashish Yadav of Keshopur, Dharmdev Yadav of Chanrehap, Dilip Singh and Amerika Chandravanshi of Maluk Bigaha village.
